Assistive Technology Health Checks

Expert-led, manual accessibility testing across desktop and mobile environments, shaped around your product, people and priorities.

We test how digital experiences actually work with assistive technologies: how people navigate, interact, understand content, complete tasks and use services independently.

Automated accessibility scanners are useful, but cannot reliably identify every interaction barrier. Our manual assistive technology testing combines technical accessibility knowledge with hands-on testing to investigate issues that automated checks and compliance checklists can miss.

Choose Your Health Check

Mini Audit — Rapid Accessibility Health Check

A focused manual assessment of a specific page, component, feature or user journey. Identify immediate accessibility concerns and opportunities for improvement without commissioning a full accessibility audit.

  • New features and components.
  • Pre-release accessibility checks and sprint-level validation.
  • Blockers in existing journeys and early accessibility risk assessment.

Diagnostic Assistive Technology Health Check

A deeper investigation across selected journeys, assistive technologies, devices and operating systems. We investigate how and why barriers occur, identify patterns and provide actionable technical findings.

  • Complex interaction problems and repeated accessibility failures.
  • Issues where automated testing has not identified the cause.
  • Focused investigation of selected technology combinations.

Ongoing Accessibility Health Checks

Regular manual testing can be incorporated into product development, release cycles or continuous improvement programmes to identify emerging barriers and validate improvements over time.

  • One-off checks or recurring delivery-cycle assessments.
  • Accessibility regression testing as products change.
  • Retesting and validation of agreed improvements.

Assistive Technologies & Testing Environments

Testing is scoped to your users, journeys and products. Our manual accessibility testing can cover a range of built-in and third-party assistive technologies; findings may vary between browsers, operating systems, devices and technology combinations.

Screen Readers

  • JAWS and NVDA on Windows PCs.
  • VoiceOver on macOS and Safari.
  • VoiceOver on iPhone and iPad with iOS and iPadOS.
  • TalkBack on Android smartphones and tablets.
  • Compatibility, announcements, navigation and task completion.

Voice Control & Speech Recognition

  • Apple Voice Control on macOS, iPhone and iPad.
  • Windows Voice Access and Android Voice Access.
  • Speech dictation and voice-driven navigation.
  • Voice commands, numbered overlays, grid interaction and natural-language control.

Magnification & Visual Access

  • Apple Zoom on Mac, iPhone and iPad.
  • Windows Magnifier and Android Magnification.
  • Browser zoom, text resizing, reflow and content visibility.
  • Interaction and reading at increased magnification.

Keyboard & Alternative Input

  • Keyboard-only navigation, focus order and focus management.
  • Keyboard traps, switch access and alternative input patterns.
  • Switch Control on Apple platforms.
  • Switch Access on Android.
  • Touch interaction and mobile target accessibility.

Desktop and Mobile Coverage

Depending on the agreed scope, health checks can cover Windows PCs, Apple Mac computers, iPhone and iPad, Android smartphones and tablets, desktop and mobile websites, responsive web applications, and native mobile applications.

Apple Accessibility Health Checks

We can manually evaluate how digital experiences behave with accessibility features built into Apple devices, including VoiceOver, Voice Control, Zoom, Switch Control and other relevant accessibility settings.

  • macOS and Safari on Apple Mac computers.
  • iPhone and iOS.
  • iPad and iPadOS.

These are Apple accessibility and assistive technology compatibility checks, not Apple device diagnostics or battery health checks. We focus on whether digital content and interactions work with the selected accessibility features.

What We Test

Manual testing investigates how barriers emerge through real interactions and combinations of interface behaviours, not just isolated defects.

  • Screen reader compatibility, accessible names, roles, states and announcements.
  • Keyboard access, logical navigation, focus visibility, order and management.
  • Modal dialogs and overlays, including focus handling and keyboard traps.
  • Forms, validation, error messages, recovery and accessible authentication or verification journeys.
  • Dynamic content, status updates and changes announced to assistive technology.
  • Voice Control labelling and discoverability, including voice commands and alternative inputs.
  • Magnification, text resizing, reflow and content visibility at increased zoom.
  • Touch target accessibility, mobile interactions and alternative input compatibility.
  • Task completion, user independence, third-party components and embedded experiences.

Our Approach

Manual and Expert-Led

We interact directly with digital services using assistive technologies rather than relying exclusively on automated accessibility scanning.

Journey-Focused

We evaluate how people navigate, interact with and complete meaningful tasks across the agreed digital experience.

Technically Informed

Accessibility expertise helps investigate behaviour, identify likely causes and make practical recommendations aligned with relevant standards, including WCAG 2.2 AA.

Evidence-Led and Actionable

Findings can record user impact, reproduction steps, assistive technology and environment details, with supporting evidence and recommendations for delivery teams.

What You Receive

Outputs are agreed to fit the scope and audience. Depending on the engagement, they may include:

  • A health check summary with prioritised findings and identified blockers.
  • Assistive technology compatibility observations and technical reproduction steps.
  • Relevant WCAG success criterion references.
  • Screenshots and supporting video evidence where appropriate.
  • Practical remediation recommendations and retesting guidance.
  • Developer-ready findings or Jira-ready tickets for product, design, QA and engineering workflows.

Full Accessibility Audits

Broader, systematic technical assessments against an agreed standard and scope. A focused health check can complement a full accessibility audit.

Specialist assistive technology health checks complement these services. They are not a substitute for lived-experience research or a complete WCAG conformance audit.
